Less than 10 percent of New Yorkers with diabetes control their condition completely, so a large majority of those affected by this disease are at risk of suffering heart attacks or other problems, as announced Today the municipal Department of Health.

A new study by New York health authorities revealed that more than 90 percent of diabetics in this city has a high blood pressure, cholesterol or blood sugar, thus face increased risk of heart attacks, stroke or other complications health.


The study, published recently in the journal Diabetes Care, also reveals that about half a million adult New Yorkers have been diagnosed with diabetes and another 200,000 suffer from the disease but are unaware of it, the Department of Health said in a press release.

As in other urban communities, New York has a higher concentration of poverty than the rest of the country and a great diversity of ethnic and racial population, which helps to register large population levels at high risk of developing diabetes, According to the authorities.

Adults with an income below $ 20,000 a year are nearly twice as likely to suffer the disease than others with more resources and among African Americans is a diabetes rate of 14.5 percent, compared to 10.7 per cent among whites.


Among New Yorkers of Asian origin is the higher rate of diabetes (16.1 percent) and pre-diabetes (32.4 percent).

The Department of Health said that diabetes has expanded over the past two decades, largely due to rising rates of obesity and physical inactivity.


In New York City more than 80 percent of these patients are obese or overweight, according to the department.
